In the Vineyard

Cheers to the culmination of Harvest 2016! This year’s grape harvest was relatively normal and spread out, compared to the last two years, which were condensed. We received our first grapes, Sauvignon Blanc, August 19, and our last grapes, Cabernet Franc, October 13. We are starting to see beautiful Fall colors of yellow, orange, and red sweep through the vineyard, as the vines approach their dormant stage. Before the vines enter dormancy, their leaves will accumulate carbohydrate reserves through photosynthesis, then the leaves will change color and fall from the vine after the first frost.

Did You Know?

The holidays are upon us and we are starting to think about festive gatherings, what wine will you be serving with your Thanksgiving turkey? Traditionally, turkey pairs with a nice Pinot Noir, sparkling wine or Champagne; but did you know, it also pairs with rosé, especially Mitchella’s Reluctant Rosé.  A fruit forward dry blend of red varietals, that will pair beautifully with the flavors of your turkey and side dishes. We also recommend Mitchella’s Viognier, Zinfandel or our GSM blend Shameless to compliment your holiday feast. Cheers!

1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper
1/2 cup raisins
1 loaf (1 lb) at least day-old bread, crust on, cut into 1-inch cubes
3 Tbsp chopped fresh basil leaves

4 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
2 cups (8 oz) shredded Gruyère (or your favorite cheese)

Preheat the oven to 400˚F. Grease an 9x11-inch baking dish, or one of similar size.  In a small saucepan, combine the tomatoes, wine, basil, raisins, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce and cayenne.  Simmer over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes.  In a large bowl, toss the bread cubes with butter and cheese, then add the tomato mixture and toss again.  Spread the mixture in the prepared baking dish in an even layer and bake until nicely browned, 25 to 30 minutes.
